Union, Maine lies about 15 miles west of Rockland on Route 17, at the center of Knox County's inland agricultural region. When you drive along area roads, you're greeted by rolling green fields with purple hills as a back-drop. Travel among the hills and you will see some of the lakes and ponds tucked into the forest.
Union is noted for its blueberry fields, dairy farms, apple orchards, wood lots and sparkling lakes and ponds-a distinction it shares with the neighboring towns of Appleton, Hope, and Washington. With a backdrop of low coastal mountains, rolling hills, and quiet valleys Union Common provides a classic rural northern New England village setting with small businesses encircling a public green. Union is also the site of one of Maine's oldest agricultural fairs.
The Union Area Chamber of Commerce's mission is to form a solid bond between members, to increase consumers' awareness of the businesses in our Chamber area and to contribute to our communities.
Our site is intended to help you easily find information on products and services as well as community information from each town. We encourage you to explore our unique area and sample the products and services we have to offer. Our membership is diverse enough to support the many needs of our communities and our visitors.
The towns in our area, Appleton, Hope, Union and Washington each date back to well before the American Revolution.
Appleton is located in the northern hills of Knox county- first known as "McLain's Mills" for lumber mills located on the St. George's River.
Hope was originally settled in the 1780's. In 1785, Charles Barrett's land dealings with the Proprietors from Boston lead to the surveying of Hope into established lots.
Union was settled in 1774 as Taylortown and later called Sterlingtown until it's incorporation in 1786, uniting the villages that lie north, east and south with the central settlement around the Common in a spirit of harmonious "Union".
Washington was established in 1811 then known as Putnam named after Isreal Putnam, who was a minuteman and leader during the Revolutionary War.
