Hotdogs, burgers, veggie burgers, and soda, plus pie and music, all on the Common, hosted by the Union Area Chamber of Commerce. Bring a blanket or chair, and a pie to share if you wish. Benefits the Chamber’s scholarship fund.
Saturday, July 18th
7:00 – 9:30 A.M. Pancake Breakfast
Pancake breakfast, fresh-made as the guests arrive, at the Methodist Church on Depot Street, just off the Common. Hosted by the Youth Group.
9:00 A.M. Canoe Trip on Seven Tree Pond
Guided canoe trip on Seven Tree Pond, with Lyle Cramer. Lyle provides the canoes (or feel free to bring your own), and will lead the trip and point out the interesting landmarks and historic features along the way. It’s a two-hour trip, leaving from and returning to Ayer Park. Reservations are advised (call Lyle at 233.2979), but walk-ups are welcome as space allows. No charge. Additional trips leaving at 2:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M.
9:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M. Vendors and Crafters on the Common
Lots of tables and booths, mostly local but many come from a distance.
9:30 A.M. Bike Decorating Contest
Bike decorating contest, at the Fire Station. Prizes in four age categories, from toddler through age 12. Special prize for most-creative entry. Kids and bikes will be in the parade afterward. Kids, decorate your bikes, bring a bike helmet (for the parade), and enter the contest! Pre-registration at the Town Office is encouraged (to help with head count), but last-minute entries are welcome.
9:30 A.M. Come Spring Bus Tour
Bus tour of historic landmarks and sites in Union, featuring those described in Ben Ames Williams’ historical novel of Union in the early days. Cost is $10 per person. Reservations are strongly advised (call 785.5444, and leave message.) The bus leaves from and returns to the Old Town House. Organized by the Union Historical Society.
10:00 A.M. Community Parade from the Fire Station to the Common
Fire Department, ambulance service, veterans, scouts, many other Union groups and businesses.
10:30 A.M. – 12:30 P.M. Music and More on the Common
Music, demonstrations, group acts, and games for the kids.
10:30 A.M. – 2:00 P.M. Hayrides and Wagon Transportation
Hayrides around the Common, and tractor-drawn wagon transportation among event sites: Thompson Center, Union Common, and the Fairgrounds.
Midday Event for the Kids at the Vose Library (details in process)
11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. Chicken Barbecue on the Common
Chicken barbecue with side dishes, organized by the Union Masonic Lodge and served on the Common, rain or shine. (Tent in case of rain.)
10:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M. Yellow School Museum Room Open at the Thompson Center
Yearbooks and many other memorabilia from the distant past, plus schoolroom settings and more.
12:00 – 4:00 P.M. Open House at Matthews Museum at the Fairgrounds
Open house (no charge) at the Matthews Museum. Many farm implements and elements of everyday life from the early days of Union.
2:00 P.M. Canoe Trip on Seven Tree Pond
Afternoon trip, guided by Lyle Cramer. (Please see description under the 9:00 A.M. event.)
4:30 – 7:00 P.M. Spaghetti Supper in the Union Town Hall
Spaghetti supper, organized by the Union Fire Department and the Union Ambulance Service.
6:00 P.M. Canoe Trip on Seven Tree Pond (Sunset trip, guided by Lyle Cramer. Please see description under 9:00 A.M. event.)
7:00 P.M. Silent Movie at the Old Town House
Old-time silent movie “City Lights” (1931) starring Charlie Chaplin, with Doug Protsik at the piano, sponsored by the Union Historical Society.
Sunday, July 19th
9:30 A.M. Golf Tournament at the Union Country Club
18-hole scramble golf tournament at the Union Country Club on Barrett Hill Road. Open to all, but limited to nine teams of four participants each. Proceeds from entry fees to be donated to the Vose Library capital campaign. For more information and reservations, contact Hank Aho, 845.2347.
