The Town of Union will be celebrating the 236th anniversary of its founding this year during Founders Day Weekend, July 16th to July 18th. Once again, the people of Union are turning all out to celebrate the Town’s founding.

The celebration begins on Friday evening at 5:30 with a pie social and music on the Union Common, sponsored by the Union Area Chamber of Commerce, plus an evening canoe trip on Seven Tree Pond at 6:00 guided and narrated by Lyle Cramer.

Founders Day on Saturday starts with a pancake breakfast at 7:00 A.M. at the People’s United Methodist Church just off the Common, a morning canoe trip at 9:00 on Seven Tree Pond, a bus tour of Union’s historic sites organized by the Union Historical Society, and a bike decorating contest for the kids in front of the Town Office. The kids and their bikes will be in the parade. There will also be a float contest during the parade.

The traditional parade leaves the Fire Station at 10:00 A.M. for the Union Common. The theme for the parade and related events is “Back to Basics”, which leaves a lot of room for creative interpretation.

After the parade, there will be band music and other entertainment on the Union Common, vendors and crafters offering their wares, hay rides on Jeff McCormick’s hay wagon pulled by Chris Packard’s tractor, and a chicken barbecue sponsored by the Masons. The Matthews Museum will be open free to the public at the Fairgrounds. The Union Fire and Ambulance Services will host a spaghetti supper at the Town Office at 4:30. And in the evening, the Union Historical Society will present a silent movie at the Old Town House with Doug Protsik at the piano, the Masons will host a country dance with the band Sidekick at the Masonic Hall, and there will be a dance at the Thompson Community Center to the music of Rave On. And on both Saturday and Sunday, the Union Country Club will open its golf course to the public from 8:00 to 6:00, no tee time required, with green fees benefiting the Vose Library.

Founders Day Weekend comes to a close on Sunday, with an outdoor worship service on the Common.
