(07/24/09) Ken Searle's Watercolors at Gibbs Library
Send this Article to a Friend

The Gibbs Library is currently featuring watercolors by Washington, Maine artist, Ken Searle.

Searle is a tenth-generation island-born native of Martha's Vineyard. His first island ancestors arrived on the Vineyard in 1670. His heritage is strongly felt in his paintings which depict the New England countryside and seashore where he has lived and worked his entire life. His paintings reflect his interest in the shapes and forms of the old barns and homesteads that speak of another age; the seashore that inspired his ancestors and still inspires him. He paints the changing seasons as they mark life's passages and depicts the lives of ancestors by capturing the buildings they left behind in his work.

Searle received his art training at the National Art School, in Washington, D.C. His work has been exhibited in galleries, museums, libraries and educational institutions throughout New England. Many will recognize his work from his portrait of the Gibbs Library that has been on display for a decade in the Gibbs’ adult fiction stacks. Searle is also a highly successful technical illustrator who now makes his residence in Washington.

There will be a reception for the artist on Friday July 24, 2009 from 5-7 PM. All are welcome. This exhibit will run through Tuesday, September 1, 2009. . The Gibbs Library is located at 40 Old Union Road, in Washington Village. FMI: 845-2663 or gibbslibrary.org
