New Medomak River Trail Opens on National Trails Day

As part of a national celebration of trails, Medomak Valley Land Trust (MVLT) and Sweetgrass Farm Winery & Distillery will open the Carroll Farm trail along the Medomak River on Saturday, June 5th at 9 am. More than 1,500 events will take place around the country including trail maintenance, hiking, paddling, biking, horseback riding, bird watching, running and trail celebrations.

Carroll Farm trail navigates 70 acres of diverse landscape, from working farmland and pasture to mixed woodland and grassy floodplains along the Medomak River. This event is free and open to the public, and a guided tour of the trails will begin after a short dedication ceremony at 9 a.m.

The historic Carroll Farm property was purchased by Keith and Constance Bodine with the goal of preserving working farmland and open space while building Sweetgrass Farm Winery & Distillery which today produces a wide variety of wines and highly acclaimed spirits using locally grown fruits including heirloom apples planted by the Carroll family.

MVLT was asked to help complete a trail that connects people to the river, their local landscape, and fosters an appreciation of the land and an active interest in protecting it. MVLT’s trail crew, local volunteers, and Boy Scout Troop #207 made short work of the brush and brambles barring their way and turned creation of the trail into a true community effort.

Participants should meet at Sweetgrass Farm Winery & Distillery, 347 Carroll Rd in Union, at 9 a.m. For more detailed directions or for more information about this event, conservation options, or MVLT’s services to landowners, please contact the land trust’s Waldoboro office at 832-5570 or mvlt@midcoast.com. Medomak Valley Land Trust was established in 1991 to preserve and promote the natural, recreational and scenic character and the traditional land uses of the Medomak River watershed for the benefit of the Medomak Valley and Muscongus Bay community, online at www.medomakvalley.org.
